A March to Agincourt
The walled town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, the gateway to the Cote d'Opal, is our base for the weekend. It has long had a reputation for its beauty, its fine restaurants - and as the setting for the classic Victor Hugo novel Les Miserables.
The town is steeped in history and has many sites of historical interest - from the mediaeval walled ramparts to the statue of the British general Sir Douglas Haig, who set up his headquarters in the town during the First World War. The impressive fortifications offer numerous facilities to walk or stroll and many visitors also take in a visit to the 15th century citadel in the town.
The town is also known for its floral displays which adorn the streets and squares through the seasons. But it is probably as a centre of gastronomy that most French people will associate Montreuil-sur-Mer - the town being host to many fine restaurants and more than its fair share of Michelin stars.
After checking in to your hotel, we meet for our first walk - a six or seven mile walk incorporating the battlements of the town, a meander through the French countryside and a stroll long the banks of La Canche. Nothing too strenuous here - and our destination is a local Auberge which is notorious for its excellent food and wine.
Transport will be waiting for us to take us to our hotel after dinner - and you'll have time for a nightcap in the town square. Then, on Day 2, after breakfast, we are taken back by coach and dropped off a few miles from Montreuil - and we begin the long march to Agincourt, following in the footsteps of Henry V. It will make for a spectacular day's walking and at the end of a fairly long, but enjoyable days walking, we return to Montreuil where you will have time to change and prepare for Dinner.
After another night out, we will need to get the walking out of our system! So, after a traditional French breakfast, we set off on our final walk to Etaples where we will meet for a farewell lunch before returning to England via the ferry ports.
In addition to the coach, back-up vehicles will also carry basic first aid facilities and refreshments will be available at regular stops along the way. You can either travel alone or link up with one of several groups to travel with fellow walkers. Families are encouraged to join us and can make their own pace on each day. Each day, whilst we will cover a few miles, we will have plenty of stops, so you should be able to finish the walks comfortably and still leave plenty of time to enjoy the route.
