Returning for the 25th anniversary of The Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital, this very special race was established to raise awareness and funds for the Oliver Fisher Special Care Baby Trust. The Neonatal Unit helps provide special care for premature or sick babies, and the Trust aims to top up NHS funding so patients, and their families, receive a gold standard level of care.
And now, it's back! Not only can you join in the race-day fun with your choice of a nippy 10k or 5k but you you will be raising funds for a super cause!
The run is suitable for runners of all abilities from experienced athletes to those new to running. We will also be hosting a junior event for our aspiring young racers. So, grab your running shoes and join us on the start line!
The race follows a two lap course allowing a 5k offering as well. The run uses a challenging, off-road route in and around the Capstone Farm Country Park.
The route benefits from some breathtaking views; you'll be in for a treat!
About the Oliver Fisher Special Care Baby Trust:
This wonderful charity supports the Neonatal Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham. Whilst the unit receives its standard funding via the NHS,a s is right and to be expected, we consider that the charity tops up these funds to push the care provision to a gold standard. A recent purchase included a cutting edge monitor that meant less invasive blood tests needed to be performed on our tiny patients. Over 1200 babies pass through the doors on the Unit in a single year and the charity raises funds not only in order to buy the highly specialised and sophisticated equipment for the care of premature and poorly babies but also their families. We provide resources to make time on the unit more comfortable and well-supported such as supplies for the family rooms and new chairs next to incubators.
The charity, first registered in 1985, got its name from Dr Oliver Fisher who was a pioneering consultant whose work led to the founding of The Special Care Baby Unit as it was at All Saints Hospital. With the hospital then being decommissioned in the 1990's, the Unit moved to its new home with a brand new name, The Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit, in July 1999. The charity works within the unit and the community to raise funds to continue their work and relationship to this day, always with the aim to continually improve care of premature and poorly babies.
